How can we help?
Quick answers to the most common questions. Still stuck? Email us and a real person will reply.
Getting started
Tap the mic, hold the phone between you and the person speaking, and read along. The first time, your phone or browser will ask for permission to use the microphone. Say yes.
Does Subt record what people say?
No. Subt never records or stores audio and never saves what was said. Captions disappear as soon as you stop or close it.
Do I need an account?
No. There’s nothing to sign up for. Open Subt, tap the mic and start reading.
Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome, Edge and Safari. Firefox doesn’t support the speech recognition Subt needs, so it won’t work there.
Captions won’t start
- Check that microphone access is turned on for Subt (or for your browser) in your phone’s settings.
- Use Chrome, Edge or Safari. Firefox isn’t supported.
- If it was working and stopped, it may have timed out after 2.5 minutes of silence. Tap the mic again.
Why did the captions stop?
Subt stops listening after 2.5 minutes of silence to save your battery. Tap the mic to start again.
How do I get the most accurate captions?
- Keep your phone within arm’s length of the person speaking.
- Background noise and several people talking at once make captions less accurate.
- Subt listens in your device’s language, so set that to the language being spoken.
Can I put it on my home screen?
- iPhone: open subt.app in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
- Android: open subt.app in Chrome, open the menu and choose Install app.
